This blog post will be about will be about esport and VR. I will try to clearly explain what esport means for those who never heard about it and how it could possibly work with VR in the future.
Beginning of VR in games
What is esport? First of all, according to Telegraph article esport is a fast growing business which by 2020 will be worth more than $1.5 billion. Players that are already competing in tournaments on the highest professional level can win prizes even up to $25 million. If I was asked to describe esport as clearly as possible I would say that it’s a competitive gaming at professional level. Firstly it sounds funny to people who never heard of esport or never had much contact with video games but we are already on that level where from organizational point of view esport doesn’t have to be ashamed as it is on the same level as ‘normal’ sports. Esport is gathering millions of viewers around the world who are watching tournaments both live and online via Twitch or YouTube. A good example of esport’s popularity would be that a lot of teams from Football have their own esport section, (Manchaster City, Paris Saint- Germain, West Ham). It is for sure one of the business area that is still not fully developed and it will only grow more in coming years.

Oculus VR
The VR Challenger League is the very first VR esports league presented together with Intel, Oculus and ESL (it’s a company which organizes esport tournaments all around the world). In 2018 the VR Challenger League came to Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice, Poland. It’s one of the biggest esport events in the world. Accoridng to IqIntel VR Challenger League players were competing for prize pool of $20,000.
Games for VR
Natural question for me right now is whether VR would ever come together with esport? I think it would work together well as you can see how far it already is, so you can only imagine how much bigger and better it can become. The only downside at the moment in cometing via VR in esport is quite young VR technology and what I mean by that is that there are still a lot of bugs that can be found and it’s not perfect. Esport at the moment is much bigger than VR so it is on the VR side now to catch up with esport.

Another great post Pawel. I learned alot in relation to what Esports is. It seems like a very good interactive way for other games to meet and play each other. I think VR would be a great advantage to Esports, but like you said VR has to catch up as Esport is growing and expanding much faster than VR. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteNice and simple read, Pawel, you got straight to the point with this article. In my opinion I don't think VR will take off in Esports for quite a while, since it's barely taken off in homes around the world. They'll need a popular VR game to catch people's interest in watchin a VR Esport.
