VR in Games.

Just like many years ago the war was the main reason for a lot of technological discoveries. Now entertainment and games are the fuel for new tech. I personally think that if it wasn’t for games (despite its early stage) it would be much more behind (VR) than it currently is. The gaming market is now one of the most profitable markets in the world so I am not surprised that the producers of VR want to make the most money because of the games.  In this blog post I will try to bring you closer to the subject of virtual reality in games.

Beginning of VR in games
On PrimaGames website we can find out that in the early 90’s a company called Virtuality Group was one of the first company to introduce players to a one of a kind arcade experience In Virtual Reality. The unit came with two games designed especially for VR – Pac Man and Zone Hunter. They built Virtuality cabinets which were big oversized units where people were able to step in, put virtual goggles on and try their 3D polygonal world. Unfortunately, because of the high price ($299) for the unit at that time the creators only sold 55,000 units. This was one of the first examples that the future of fully working VR is not that bright.

Oculus VR
VR re- entered the market again after good few years of inactivity in that matter. Company called Oculus VR started a kickstarter campaign about their new product called the Oculus Rift which was a headset for VR. Campaign was highly successful and it was only a matter of time that they started to present their product at different tech trade events. Everyone who tried them out during those events were truly amazed by the product and its technology. Soon after the company became very successful and could introduce new VR Library of different games and some of them were really popular such as Doom 3, Mirror’s Edge etc.

Games for VR
Thanks to Oculus VR, virtual reality games became great again, and below there are some examples of most popular games for Oculus VR and not only because as we know there are few other companies that produce VR headsets and according to Lifewire at the moment are HTC Vive ($499), Playstation VR ($261), Samsung Gear VR ($103).

List of games:
Rec Room- Is a game which puts you in a social club where you can join other players doing a range of different activities such as paintball or disc golf.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew: You and your group of friends command a ship that eventually will have some trouble and your crew will have to fight it together.

Fallout 4: Well known game is coming to VR now and you will be able to explore apocalyptic Boston from you couch and our home. We will be able to play the entire game from start to finish. This game Is a must buy for every Fallout fans out there.

Minecraft: Another well known game, still the same blocky world but different experiences. I’m sure that this version of Minecraft will be even more enjoyable than the ordinary version.

The Climb: Maybe it sounds a little strange and boring in the beginning but it is really an extraordinary experience to climb a very beautiful and detailed scenery.

My opinion on the future of VR gaming
In my opinion games on VR are definiately our future and more and more games will soon be released on VR headsets. I also believe that soon each house will be equipped with their own VR headset because it will greatly expand which will cause the prices to drop. I hope you enjoyed this blog post and I also want invite you to read my future blog posts.

  1. Good post Pawel, it will be interesting to see where virtual reality will go in 2018. I think at the moment the hardware is still too expensive. I was reading about mobile VR rigs, such as google cardboard, gear VR, or the upcoming oculus Go, but they're all a significant step down in terms of the types of experiences they can deliver compared to the more expensive options. Enjoyed reading the games you've mentioned. I will be sure to check them out.

  2. Great post Pawel on VR in Gaming. It was great to read that popluar games like Mindcraft, and Fallout 4 are going to be available on VR within the coming year. This shows how fast VR is growing, espcially in the gaming industry. It was interesting to learn that the first type of gaming VR came into life in the early 90's. Personally VR is still expensive even on Console, and could take creators and developers more time to bring this price down. Overall I can't wait to see what other games come to VR. Good job!

  3. I also hope that the prices for VR headsets will drop, as they're pretty costly at the moment. They're not the best investment just yet, due to the small and simplistic library of games as of now, but time will change that, as outlined in your article. Another good read, Pawel

Virtual Reality in Esport?

This blog post will be about will be about esport and VR. I will try to clearly explain what esport means for those who never heard about it and how it could possibly work with VR in the future.  Beginning of VR in games What is esport? First of all, according to Telegraph article esport is a fast growing business which by 2020 will be worth more than $1.5 billion. Players that are already competing in tournaments on the highest professional level can win prizes even up to $25 million. If I was asked to describe esport as clearly as possible I would say that it’s a competitive gaming at professional level. Firstly it sounds funny to people who never heard of esport or never had much contact with video games but we are already on that level where from organizational point of view esport doesn’t have to be ashamed as it is on the same level as ‘normal’ sports. Esport is gathering millions of viewers around the world who are watching tournaments both live and onli...
